World Tour Soccer is perhaps the least hyped game of all the launch titles.
For one thing, it?s soccer, and for another there?s FIFA. Well it was my
good fortune to have this as my only gaming option when purchasing the PSP.
Good fortune you say? Absolutely! Otherwise I would have never known that
the PSP was capable of providing a challenging team sports game.
The gameplay in World Tour Soccer gets progressively harder as you advance,
world teams are imbued with the talents of their real world counterparts.
If you?re successful you will unlock new playable teams, uniforms and
stadiums. Accomplishing 100% completion will take some time. Each team has
its own strategy and strengths so what works against one is no guarantee to
be successful against another. What more could you ask from a portable
soccer game? The announcer does an admirable job in a British accent that
lends a real sense of reality to the game. As you advance and take your
shots he dramatically describes your actions adding to your own
excitement.
Most of the playable options are quick to learn and you can get competitive
in no time. While it gets tougher as you advance through the tournaments,
you will pick up new tricks to aid along the way which you?ll be thankful
for against the stiffer competition.
While the gameplay is the star of this title, graphically it?s quite good
as well. FIFA may be a little splashier in the graphics department as well
as having more playable teams, but the feel of world tour soccer is that
you could be sitting in a London pub following the action. It flows like
real soccer and the games moves surprisingly quick to the conclusion of
each game, which if you?re tied is the only real downside to the gameplay:
the shootout. While it sounds like a great idea, it?s brutally difficult to
control the action and any favorable outcome has more to do with luck than
skill.
In all there is little to complain about world tour soccer. It comes packed
with almost 250 playable teams, 8 stadiums, Wi-Fi for head to head play,
several game modes, a price tag $10 bucks less than FIFA and about the most
challenging gameplay your likely to find from any PSP sports game. Is it
likely to catch on? Well maybe not in the states. It is a soccer game after
all, but I sense a hit when it hits Europe. So don?t let the Euro's have
all the fun! If your willing to give a soccer game a try, World Tour Soccer
may be just what your looking for.
